  Algonkian Elementary Invention Night: Handwashing Demonstration

  More than 400 people attended Algonkian Elementary's Invention Night on February 28. The event's goal was to empower students to make meaningful contributions to the world, using Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics. It's aim was also to provide access points for guiding and exciting student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. There were many hands-on activities, demonstrations, and experiments. Some companies brought technology for students and parents to view, and learn how technology impacts the world. This was our first year participating in this event, and we were asked to showcase a demonstration illustrating the importance of proper hand washing techniques. Our demonstration sessions began with a Patient First nurse leading students to cover their hands with a special "Glo Germ" solution.  That solution would light up as a black light was passed over their hands. Next, the nurse had the students wash their hands as they normally would. A second pass of the black light showed the students the germs all the little blotches and crevices where the solution remained, illustrating how germs could still linger on their hands.   Community Partners: Algonkian Elementary

  The future is in reading. Recently, Patient First partnered with Algonkian Elementary School near the Sterling, VA location to sponsor their school literacy efforts. Patient First has longstanding partnerships with several school in the Greater D.C. area. The school used the donation to purchase decodable books which were needed in all grade levels. Decodable books encourage children to sound out words using decoding strategies rather than guessing from pictures or predicting from other cues. Algonkian Elementary is grateful for the donation from Patient First to help the readers of the future. "The books have been successful in helping our students become better readers," said Brian Blubaugh, Algonkian Elementary School Principal.

  STREAM Night at Signal Hill Elementary

  On Friday, January 17, we were invited to participate in STEM Night at Signal Hill Elementary School, located just a mile from our Manassas Center. The event was bustling, with activities spread throughout the school. The cafeteria and gym were filled with engaging experiments, and we were stationed right by the entrance, which allowed us to greet everyone coming in. This marked our first event of the year for our handwashing project, and it was a big hit with both kids and adults. Many were excited to participate in the experiment to see how well they washed their hands. It also sparked friendly competitions between kids and parents with comments like, “I bet I wash my hands better than you!” Throughout the event, we consistently had a line of 4-5 students waiting to take their turn. The kids especially enjoyed seeing their hands under the UV light, making the experience both educational and fun.   This event also provided a great opportunity to connect with parents, many of whom were familiar with Patient First.   McIntosh Elementary School Rhythm and Wellness Night

  McIntosh Elementary School, located in Newport News, VA, hosted its inaugural Rhythm and Wellness Concert, Bookfair, and Fitness Night on February 29th. Led by the incredible talents of the school's second and third graders, students and their families sang, read, danced, drummed, stretched and learned as they embraced the beat, ignited their fitness journey, and delved into the world of literature all in one unforgettable night. Around every corner of the school was an activity to participate in. Patient First, who was positioned in the front of the school, offered parents, teachers and administrators free blood pressure screenings, many of whom took advantage of the opportunity.  The school itself is a bilingual school. Approximately, 15% of their student population is Hispanic. Each activity for the evening was offered in both English and Spanish. Many of the families who attended the event were not aware of Patient First, despite our Denbigh center being approximately 1 mile from the school.   Perry Hall Elementary Kindness Night

  On Wednesday, February 19th, Perry Hall Elementary, one of our partner schools, held its annual Kindness Night event.  Created as an opportunity to gather at the school and take part in activities which promote kind and positive behavior, this year's event served a dual and poignant purpose. In addition to creating crafts that showcased cooperation, generosity, and selflessness, students also created heartfelt tributes to one of their beloved teachers, who passed away to cancer earlier in the year. For a small, two hour school event, the evening was a huge hit! Over 150 people attended, sharing pizza, creating kindness cards, meeting Ravens mascot Poe, and generally having fun with one another. Patient First was the only community partner invited to attend the evening, and received a nice shoutout from the principal during her opening announcements. Everyone we spoke with had brought their families to our Perry Hall center, which is just over a mile down the road from the school, and all had wonderful things to say about the level of care they'd received.   Bowie Baysox Eras Night

  There was plenty of Bad Blood between the Bowie Baysox and the Richmond Flying Squirrels Friday night, as the minor league teams engaged in a slugfest as the Baysox hosted Eras Night for the fans. In keeping with the theme of the night, many of the people who came out to the game arrived decked out in their best Taylor Swift gear, Bejeweled with their friendship bracelets and other fan paraphernalia. Plenty of people stopped by our table to say Thank You (Aimee was not there), for the services we provide. So many, in fact, that we struggled to keep there from being too much Blank Space on our table, as they snatched up our promotional items, including branded stress ball baseballs.  The night was quite  the display of offense, with more than 22 runs scored between both teams, resulting in a final score of 17-10, with the Squirrels as the victor.
